Most boilers sit quietly through the summer, heating a bit of water and not much else. Then the first cold morning arrives, everyone turns the heating up at once, and that’s when hidden faults show themselves. Booking your service in autumn helps you avoid that.

An annual service is recommended by boiler manufacturers, and for most newer boilers it’s a condition of the warranty. During the visit, a Gas Safe registered engineer checks the boiler is burning safely, cleans the parts that need it, tests the safety devices and controls, and checks the flue and system pressure.

Doing it in autumn has a few practical advantages:

  • Any worn parts can be replaced before you rely on the heating every day
  • It’s easier to find an appointment before the winter rush
  • You go into the colder months knowing the boiler is safe and efficient

It’s also a good moment to check the rest of the system. Bleed any radiators that are cold at the top, check the boiler pressure gauge, and test your carbon monoxide alarm.

If you’ve noticed anything unusual already, such as the boiler losing pressure, making new noises or locking out, don’t wait for the service. Mention it when you book so the engineer can look into it.
